Weekend visit suggestions - here are a selection:

Erlebnisbergwerk Merkers - Formerly largest potash mine in the world, former gold treasury of German Reichsbank and today it is the largest and deepest concert hall in the world which features a laser show and a crystal cave with huge salt crystals. This is only open on Saturday. Not accessible for disabled persons.

Point Alpha - a memorial to the former border observation post between West and East Germany during the cold war. The museum includes both NATO and Warsaw Pact installations.

Biosphere reserve Rhön (Hessen) was recognised by UNESCO for the sustainable development of local agriculture, nature, tourism and trade ensuring its range and quality of habitats. Wasserkuppe Rhön is the highest point in Hessen

Rhöner Museumsdorf in Tann - a museum village consisting of 3 different farms: it gives a vivid impression of rural life over the previous two centuries.

Schwarzes Moor (Black Moor) an important internationally recognised wetlands. Much of the moor is a largely undisturbed and intact raised bog.

Kirchenburg Ostheim - Germany´s best preserved fortified church
